December Rest in Sadhana

Screenshot 2025 01 22 at 11.25.26 AM: December Rest in Sadhana
Photo & decoration credit: Melissa Atma Lyons
Lately I have been reminding myself and others that Yoga is a Spiritual practice that goes beyond the physical practice of poses. The practices and techniques are for us to know the Spirit that embodies and dwells in this Humanness. This is called Sadhana. Sadhana is a spiritual practice. It is the relationship with Spirit, the Spirit that embodies this human form. Yoga is a spiritual practice – the teachings of Yoga are to connect us to Spirit and help us form a deeper connection with the divine, experience a sense of aliveness, and reach in-lightenment, and inner peace.

December is the time of the year when I feel the pull to be introverted. It’s the season when the weather, the daylight, the night time naturally calls me inward to reset. Similarly, I also feel the impulse to be in service, quiet contemplation or meditation, Kirtan-Chanting, supporting our community through the food bank and other supportive initiatives. For me this feels like a reset on Sadhana, Living Yoga, reflection, rest and restoration, retreating, and wintering.

Sadhana can be a ritual, a conscious and purposeful practice. It could involve meditation, prayer, mantra chanting, Yoga poses, or any other discipline aimed at self-improvement and spiritual awakening. The essence of sadhana lies in its regularity and deliberateness. It’s often a daily practice, done at specific times (e.g., early morning or sunset), that helps to develop focus, devotion, witness the mind and emotions, and create faith. The purpose of sadhana is to go beyond the ego identifications, witness the mind, and cultivate  compassion, humility, patience, and wisdom. It is seen as a tool for the transformation of the individual on all levels—physical, mental, and spiritual.

Sadhana is to deepen one’s spiritual connection. Sadhana helps to awaken higher consciousness through self-realization. Sadhana is deeply personal and can vary depending on the tradition, teacher, and spiritual inclinations. While sadhana can be practiced individually, it is often supported by a gathering of like-minded individuals (Satsang) or a Sangha ( community). So you cultivate the capacity to carry this reset with you everywhere you go, to everyone you meet. This is how Sadhana becomes Living Yoga.

As the season winds down, I can’t help but feel like I’m trying to hold on to the last bits of summer! Does anyone else As November arrives, it invites us to slow down and turn inward. The shorter days and cooler air encourage a time of reflection, allowing us to focus on restoration and self-love. Your life is a beautiful tapestry of experiences—relationships, growth, heartache, and transformation. This month, embrace the journey that has shaped you into who you are today—each experience, joy, challenge, and lesson learned.

Welcome September

Screenshot 2024 09 17 at 12.54.24 PM: Welcome September
As the season winds down, I can’t help but feel like I’m trying to hold on to the last bits of summer! Does anyone else feel the same way? It’s almost like going through a grieving process for those warm, long days spent swimming in the ocean. You might still catch me out there, snorkeling, and I even broke out my shorty wetsuit this week. Growing up in the South, I’ve always been a warm-water person.

But as much as I love summer, I’m equally excited about the creative side of planning and programming for the upcoming months. There’s so much potential! We’ve got an incredible Fall season lined up with some amazing offerings at the Center. September is packed with special events every weekend, and we’ve included a list of what’s happening below, along with details on our Fall Open House Week,  Sept. 7th to September 14th and Fall Membership and pass discount (details below). Don’t forget to use the code FALL2024 until Sept 22nd

On Tuesday as folks return to a more routine life, I’m heading out for the Fall 2024 tour. This year leading a group of 10, on a 19-day journey along the Portuguese Camino coastal route to Santiago de Compostela. It’s going to be an incredible experience with Yoga Meditation and Yoga Nidra woven into the retreat as we walk together. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook for photos and updates @yogabythesea1.

As we enter the Fall season, embracing your meditation, pranayama, and asana yoga practice can be incredibly supportive during this time of transition. Grounding routines help us smoothly navigate the currents of change. Remember to stay hydrated, enjoy locally grown and sourced foods, and spend a few moments each morning reading something inspiring to connect with your spirit for the day. Before sleep, reflect on your day with gratitude.

Flower Moon Bloom!

8edacb7a bf09 8c2e cafc 46f8821e8ec3 scaled: Flower Moon Bloom!

This is a powerful New Moon phase for intention planting, and nurturing creativity through meditation, journaling, visualizing and being open to powerful shifts of harmony, sparkle and expansion. In the afterglow of the Solar Eclipse, this New Moon of spring embraces the opportunity for new beginnings, a breath of fresh air to plant seeds for the future and discover what sparks joy in your life.

This new growth cycle is grounded in embarking on fresh journeys. Give yourself some space to ground and embrace the present. Slow down, breath, fully immerse in each moment, and relax the urge to overthink. Feel the stillness within and around you. It’s within this stillness that life’s complexities simplify themselves. Courage and bravery are essential to integrate our experiences and rely on our inner compass, for each next step.

This New Moon invites us to discover and honor the power of stillness, allowing us to connect with our inner strength, resilience, and center. When we quiet our minds, our strength becomes palpable, and from this place of inner security, our creative expression flourishes. The creative flame ignites, when we trust in our inner strength, we can manifest abundance in all its forms.

Focus on nurturing your self-worth. Feel your strength and embrace your wisdom, for it will inspire you to take the necessary leaps of faith for your evolution. As you bask in the energy of the New Moon, cultivate gratitude and acknowledge your abundance. Recognize that gratitude is the fertile soil in which abundance grows.

By appreciating what you already have, you find contentment in the present, that what you have is enough. This ease naturally attracts more of abundance of what you value into your life.

As you sit with the energy of the new Moon, decide what in your life needs to shift for you always to carry the vibration of gratitude and abundance.

With Love,

Love Hasu and All your Friends at Yoga by the Sea.
